Synopsis

Mahoro recruits all the regular female characters to hunt down where Suguru is hiding his stashes of dirty books and magazines while Suguru recruits his friends to help protect them.

Quotes

      “Dirty thoughts are bad!” (Mahoro)

The Long View

This special supposedly takes place at some point during the second season, most likely between Episodes 9 and 10 although the series suggests that there isn’t a big time gap there. Regardless of the timing, this production gives every indication of having been thrown together quickly to capitalize on the popularity of the series. The technical merits and artistry are substandard even compared to the second season, and the one-note story is pure fluff, although it does occasionally get quite funny. The only meaningful detail that comes out of it is the revelation of where Mahoro gets her “dirty thoughts are bad” philosophy from and where Suguru gets his obsession with dirty magazines from – and, curiously, it’s from the same source.

And speaking of fan service, Summer Special continues the grand Mahoromatic tradition of heavy fan service. All of the female characters appear nude in it in addition to various shots from dirty magazines and occasional panty shots. There’s even fan service in the opener, which uses the theme music from the first season opener but assorted images from both seasons. The brand-new closer, which features SD versions of all the younger girls (including Minawa) doing a traditional dance in kimonos, features lyrics that are just as saucy as the previous two closers.

Summer Special is a necessity for any Mahoromatic completist or devotee of fan service, but otherwise I can’t recommend it.

DVD Extras

·  Company previews

·  Clean opener/closer

·  Color and Line Art galleries

·  Promo videos for both seasons and the Summer Special – these range in length from 3-5 minutes each and depict Suguru and Mahoro conversing with each other about an animation studio wanting to make an anime series about them. Arguably the highlight of the DVD.
